Lynn Graham Designs is Your Wedding’s Marketing Department
This month, we had the great opportunity to sit down with stationer Lynn Graham from Lynn Graham Designs.
Her company offers an array of custom paper and paperless services ranging from save the dates, invitations and menus, to snapchat filters and more. As the current Vice President of Programs at NACE Boston and a proud member of the Boston Wedding Group, Lynn talks about being a business owner, industry trends, and what inspires her.
SL: How and when did you get started with weddings and events?
LG: Getting laid off is what caused me to become an entrepreneur. I was already making invitations for my friend's weddings on the side, it’s something I've always loved to do. I thought it would be a good time to focus on my own wedding and create my invitations. I never really interned under another stationer. My first clients were my friends, and we were very casual, but [that’s how I built] my own process. I just work the way I want to work. I treat people the way I want to be treated. I go by my own book. It seems to be working out.
SL: What’s a skill you’ve developed since you first started?
LG: For a while, I was doing a lot of paper production because of my newspaper and advertising background. Lately, I’ve been getting out of the world of print and exploring the paperless field. I always had a knack for logo design, but I’ve been forcing myself to learn all the parts of the industry.
SL: We noticed your website has snapchat filters as a service. The stationer is essentially the marketing department for weddings.
LG: Yes! I’ve had to teach myself [all about social media and digital marketing] because that’s what people want now. And why shouldn’t I grow?
SL: Any upcoming wedding trends we can look out for?
LG: I think in the past year there’s been a lot of moody palettes. Jewel tones, moody dark flowers. Foil stamping is so big. Acrylic invites came back a little bit last year. Anything laser cut is cool. I’ve been getting a lot of requests for deco so we’re going back to handmade paper.
SL: What is the easiest, most timeless option for couples?
LG: Probably a really nice monogram. You can put it on everything like a gobo (editor’s note: “gobo” stands for GOes Between Optics. It is a stencil that can be placed in front of a light source) or your welcome bags. It’s great to put it on a thank you note and have it for after the wedding too. [A monogram is] something you can essentially brand everywhere.
SL: Who do you look up to? Who is your inspiration in this industry?
LG: I am really inspired by my office mate Lo. She is an event designer and planner. I am admittedly not so good with interior design, so I work well with her because she’ll present me the most beautiful design boards for couples and I get to translate that feeling onto paper. It’s always a fun challenge because she goes outside the box and pushes for something you’d see in a magazine. She’s such an inspiration - and she decorated our office!
SL: Any other vendors you think would be a great fit for the speechless spotlight?
LG: Pearl from Designed by Delsie!
